Highland Park, IL is one of Chicago Metropolitan Area’s most affluent North Shore suburbs on the banks of Lake Michigan, lying 26 miles north of Chicago downtown and in Lake County. It is home to a mostly White population, with minorities of other races residing there as well, along with a large Jewish community.

The 2000 census revealed a population density of 2,537.5 per square mile and 11,934 housing units situated at an average density of 965.5 per square mile. A comparison of the 2000 and 2010 census for the city reveals little change in its demographics over the 10 years. There seems to have been a population drop in the area from 31,365 people to 29,793 between the two years. In 2000, 11,521 households and 8,917 families were recorded as living in Highland Park.
Between the two years, the population of Whites remained mostly unchanged (from 91.20 percent to 91.05 percent). The African American population went up from 1.78 percent to 1.84 percent as did Native American inhabitants (from 0.08 percent to 0.18 percent). More Asians moved in, growing from 2.28 percent to 2.9 percent as did Pacific Islanders, from 0.01 percent to 0.03 percent. Other races made up 3.46 percent of the population in 2000, which fell to 2.51 percent in 2010. The Hispanic and Latino local community also fell from 8.90 percent to 7.28 percent of the population. 1.18 percent of the 2000 population comprised of people from two or more mixed races, while the number was 1.48 percent in 2010.
There were 11,521 households, of which 69.9 percent were married couples, 36.9 percent had children, 22.6 percent were non-families and 5.8 percent were single-female households. Individuals made up 19.5 percent of households and 9.3 percent households had people over the age of 65. The average family had 3.09 individuals and the household size on average was 2.71.
